Home education in Denmark:

Flexible, legal — and supervised (2025)

A clear, simple guide for families exploring their options.

Home education (hjemmeundervisning) is legal in Denmark and protected by the Constitution.

Parents can educate their children at home as long as instruction is comparable to that of public schools. Families must notify their local municipality, which will periodically supervise to ensure education remains suitable.

Is schooling from home legal in Denmark?

Yes. Article 76 of the Danish Constitution guarantees parents the right to choose home education. The Education Act requires that all children receive an education equivalent to public school standards. Municipalities are responsible for ensuring this through periodic reviews.

What are the steps?

1
Notify your municipality. Send written notice before beginning home education. You can start immediately after notification.
2
Provide an equivalent education. Parents can choose their own materials and approach, but outcomes must match Folkeskole standards.
3
Expect periodic supervision. Inspectors may visit or request reports once or twice per year.
4
Keep records of learning. Maintain lesson plans and samples of work to demonstrate progress.
5
Cooperate with inspectors. If education is deemed insufficient, the municipality may require school enrolment.
In Denmark, families who choose hjemmeundervisning (home education) must notify their local municipality before beginning and ensure their child’s education is equivalent to that of the public school. It gives parents wide flexibility in how learning happens, but it also means taking responsibility for lesson planning, progress tracking, and cooperating with inspectors who visit once or twice a year to review learning outcomes.

bina is a global, accredited online school for children ages 4–12.

We offer live, interactive, small-group learning that brings the energy and connection of a great classroom into your home.

Small, live classes with caring teachers

Classes are capped at 7 students, so teachers know your child’s name, learning style, and interests. You stay as involved as you want to be while we handle the teaching and structure.

A curriculum that fits your child

Your child learns at a pace that works for them, with space to explore their interests and the support they need to thrive. Our accredited programme is internationally recognised, giving you peace of mind that they’re learning what matters.

Friendships and belonging

Children make genuine friends with classmates from around the world. In small groups, they build confidence, practise social skills, and feel part of a real community — all from the safety of home.

You stay in the know

You’ll get weekly updates on what your child is learning and quarterly progress reports. A dedicated family success manager works with you to make sure everything fits your goals as a parent.
For legal purposes, families in Denmark are considered to be home educating. Parents hold the duty to provide a suitable education, but with bina you don’t have to do the teaching yourself. We provide the full school experience.

The questions we hear most from parents like you.

Will my child keep up with the Danish curriculum?

Yes. bina’s accredited programme meets or exceeds primary-level expectations. We share detailed progress updates and reports you can use during municipal supervision.

Will my child make friends if we learn from home?

Absolutely. Small, live classes and group projects help children connect quickly with classmates in Denmark and around the world.

How much of my time will this take as a parent?

We handle the teaching, curriculum, and structure. You support your child’s routine and communicate with your municipality, but you’re not expected to be their teacher.

Can we return to public school later?

Yes. Our accredited curriculum keeps children aligned with Danish and international standards, making it easy to re-enter local or private schools at any time.

What about screens?

Classes happen in short, focused blocks with movement, breaks, and hands-on activities built in.

Do we need approval from the municipality?

No approval — only notification. Families simply inform their kommune that they’re providing home education. bina’s progress reports make that process easy to document.

Will bina’s programme satisfy Danish supervision requirements?

Yes. We provide detailed learning reports and evidence of progress that municipalities can review during annual visits.

Can lessons be taught in Danish?

Our teachers instruct primarily in English, but we can coordinate Danish-language learning resources to ensure your child stays confident in both languages.

What if we move to another municipality or abroad?

bina travels with you. We’ll help you understand local reporting or registration requirements wherever you relocate.
